Not There Yet by LULU. is a very welcome addition to the Afrobeats and R&B fusion scene.
The production is quite interesting to hear, as how the instruments blended with the artist’s voice, creating a seamless flow. Although at some point towards the end of the song, the production is a little loud, overshadowing the artist’s voice, which is not always a bad thing but something that you might notice when being critical of the work. The arrangement of the vocals, as well as the layering, is quite impressive to hear.
When it comes to the artistry of this work, you could say it transports you to a version of reality where all you think of is being hopeful, while being despondent about the reality that is in front of you. The lyrics are consistent throughout the song, and you are kept in that bubble of hopeful belief for better chances and a beautiful tomorrow. You know what you’re listening to, and it gives the sense of comfort that comes with a gentle rain after a very hot week in Abuja.
The artist uses her voice as a very intricate instrument on its own, working to produce a layered effect and conveying emotion in such a way that is unique to R&B but interpreted with the Afrobeats lover in mind. There isn’t much to be corrected or over-analyzed about the work but to say it’s a welcome addition to the spaces that it is trying to occupy. It not allowing itself to be confined by what it’s supposed to sound like, be it a danceable track or an emotional track, works for it, as it fits seamlessly into any lane the listener decides to view it from.
